“You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”
—Ansel Adams
A BIT ABOUT ME.
During junior high school I was fortunate to have a graphic arts teacher, Mr. Quick, who introduced my to typesetting, letterpress printing, design and photography. This inspired my first career move in the form of a self-designed and printed business card with the slogan We take the picture, you just smile.
A few years later, a fortune teller in Kathmandu, Nepal, stole my camera. I stopped taking pictures but was far too busy being interested in India to worry about it. The fortune teller did promise me a happy life and so far that worked out as predicted so I can’t complain.
Later, when I was working professionally in advertising I shot a bit to fill in the needs of the job. This led to journalistic work culminating in feature stories for Vanedades (Latin America) and Burda (Germany) magazines. Switching careers, I spent a couple busy decades traveling the world as a literary agent and as a publisher with scarcely a picture to prove it.
Eventually my wife bought me a roll of film for Christmas and told me to go out and take some pictures. Fortunately, my Pentax Spotmatic never failed and I took the picture above. [Then more, mostly interesting, things happened.]
One day I needed photos for a book I was designing and told the client to buy me a camera instead of hiring a photographer. I got a Fujifilm X-E1 and have been shooting with Fujifilm cameras and mostly old Leica, Canon and Nikon lenses for the past few years.
I like it when people feel that they look good in my pictures, I like to tell a story, and I like moments, real or imagined, when I capture a feeling worth revisiting.
I hope you find a picture that you like among these images.
Thanks for looking.
